What to do when your garbage disposal hums?

If your garbage disposal hums but doesn't seem to be working properly, there are a few things you can try to fix the problem:

  1. Check for a jammed impeller: The impeller is the spinning blade in the disposal unit that grinds up food waste. If it becomes jammed with debris, it can cause the motor to hum but not function properly. Use a flashlight to look into the disposal unit and see if you can spot any debris that may be causing the jam.

  2. Press the reset button: Most garbage disposals have a reset button located on the bottom or side of the unit. Pressing this button can sometimes reset the disposal and get it working again.

  3. Disconnect power to the disposal: If the above steps do not work, disconnect power to the disposal by unplugging it or turning off the circuit breaker. Wait a few minutes, then reconnect power and try turning on the disposal again.

  4. Check for leaks or clogs: Look for any leaks or clogs in the disposal unit or drain pipes that may be causing the humming.

  5. If none of the above steps work, it's likely that the disposal unit needs to be repaired or replaced, it's best to call a professional plumber to diagnose the problem and fix it.

It's important to note that if you can't find the cause of the problem, or if the disposal is leaking, it's best to call a professional plumber to diagnose and fix the problem, to prevent the risk of electrical shock or water damage.
