How to prepare for a rain storm and minimize flood damage

There are a number of steps you can take to prepare for a rain storm and minimize flood damage:

  1. Clear gutters and downspouts: Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are clear of debris so that water can flow freely.

  2. Direct water away from your house: Make sure that water is directed away from your house and that any drainage ditches or swales are clear of debris.

  3. Inspect your roof: Check for any missing or damaged shingles, and repair or replace them as needed.

  4. Install sump pumps: Consider installing sump pumps in your basement or crawlspace to help remove water that may accumulate.

  5. Keep an emergency kit: Prepare an emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, and a supply of food and water.

  6. prepare plan to protect important items like valuables, photo albums, important documents and family heirlooms

  7. Be aware of flood watches and warnings: Keep an eye out for flood watches and warnings and be prepared to take action if necessary.

  8. Evacuate if directed by authorities.

  9. Document your property: Make sure you have a record of your property, in case you need to make an insurance claim after the storm.

Remember, always stay safe and take precautions. Avoid moving around on flood waters, as it may be deeper or have electrical current or sharp objects.
